Chloride Contamination on the Groundwater, Soil and Plants Coursework

Chloride Contamination on the Groundwater, Soil and Plants - Coursework Example Water from sumps has been taken for estimating the surface water content and from more profound wells for sub surface water saltiness. At last, the dirt was likewise tested and the saltiness of the dirt was additionally estimated. This was found to in any case be raised however it has descended radically on a normal in all the three cases. The sub surface water test was regularly taken subsequent to rescuing the water in the inspecting wells. Correspondingly, the dirt examples are taken at a profundity of 60 centimeters in accordance with the standard soil examining strategy. Surface water tests were gotten from the sump that was accessible. The inspected qualities were then utilized for investigation to discover the pace of chloride decrease in the sub surface water and soil. This would help in demonstrating to what degree the vegetation can develop in the dirt at the heath. It was discovered that the dirt conditions are not especially, directly for the tree development. However, even up to 20000 ppm in the tree, it was discovered that the nearness of chloride may not antagonistically influence tree development. The perfect ppm, notwithstanding, is 4 to 8 ppm and that is the figure truly took a gander at for vegetation to flourish anyplace. It is accordingly, significant that the work is finished by diminishing the ne arness of chlorides further. ... 2. Affirmation 3. Commitment 4. GENERAL INTRODUCTION The accompanying arrangement venture was completed inside the British Petroleum (BP), at Wytch Farm, which is an oil field and oil and flammable gas handling office in the Purbeck locale of Dorset, England from eleventh June to first September 2007. 4.1 Existing circumstance The Wytch Farm Oilfield, is the biggest known inland field in the UK, it lies underneath the southern shores of Poole harbor in a zone of remarkable characteristic excellence well known for its scene, nature and courtesy esteem (BP Petroleum Development, 1986). The Wytch Farm Oilfield, with its around 300 million barrels of recoverable oil, is a helpful to the oil business and to the neighborhood and national economy. It creates in present time around 70,000 barrels (roughly 11,365,000 liters) of oil every day. The oilfield comprises of two significant repositories, the shallower Birdport repository at 900 meters under the surface (BP Exploration, 1994) this supply was found in 1974, and later, it was created to deliver 4,000 barrels of unrefined petroleum every day (BP Petroleum Development, 1986). The bigger and progressively profitable supply is Sherwood repository, which is around 1500 meters beneath the surface (BP Exploration, 1994). The more profound supply (Sherwood store) was found in 1978 yet it stays immature. Creation testing from one Sherwood well has expanded and these days creation is around 5,500 barrels of oil for every day (BP Petroleum Development, 1986). The area of Wytch Farm is on the southern shores of Pool Harbor. This region is delicate scene that incorporates various discussion assignments. Unrefined petroleum is removed from the Wytch Farm, Wareham and Kimmeridge

Project Plan On Grinding Machine Click Now to Get Solution

Question: Describe about the Essay for Project Plan on Grinding Machine. Answer: Introduction The particular project proposal plan consists of the topic that is grinding machine. It is the process by which the metals are removed by the application of abrasives that are bonded to form a rotating wheel. When the machine is moving the abrasive particles, it acts as a cutting tool. The machine supports as well as rotating the abrasive wheel of the grinding machine to support the work piece into proper relation to the wheel. It is employed in order to obtain with high accuracy along with a high class of surface finish within the work piece (Yu et al. 2015). The new advent of new generation of the grinding machine is characterized by its rigidity, speed as well as power enables the machine to go for high-efficiency deep grinding. The project proposal reflects the literature review followed by research questions, aims as well as sub-goals. After that, the theoretical content such as the theoretical methodology of the proposed project and plan. Within the experimental setup, it gives an overview of the proposed topic on the use of grinding machine as well as its functions and usefulness. After analyzing the experimental result from the research methodology, it discusses the result, outcome and relevance of the proposed research plan based on grinding machine. It provides a project planning, and Gantt chart depicts a work breakdown that should be undertaken to complete the project plan within the estimated timeframe. Literature Review Within the manufacturing process, the engineers are facing two vital problems. Firstly, it is the process to determine the desired quality of product to meet with its technical specifications. Secondly, it is the maximization the performance of manufacturing system using available resources (Ding, Tang and Zhong 2016). In the grinding process, most of the phenomenon are complex, and it interacts with a large number of factors that prevent them from high process performance work to do. In order to overcome the above two mentioned problems, the researcher proposes a machine that can simulate the conditions during grinding is grinding machine. The grinding is the manufacturing process that determines the technological outcome as well as quality (Rowe 2013). A grinder is used to outline as well as finish the materials with low surface roughness as well as a high surface of quality. It has finishing operations that remove small quantities of metals and delivers high accurate products to t he manufacturing industries. Apart from this, particular grinding applications are involved to eliminate high volumes of metals. The grinding operations are successes based on a proper selection of different grinding parameters such as speed of a wheel, a speed of work, transverse feed as well as the in-feed area of contact; balance the grinding wheels as well as dressing (Haase, Haase and Ralf 2015). Based on the operations of the grinding machine, if the machine is not mounted securely then it results in vibration. It causes the ground to produce irregular surface. Improper alignment affects the accuracy of the grinding (Williams et al. 2016). In order to absorb the vibration, it is advised to situate the strip of cushioning material under the flanges of the mounting. At the time when the wheel of the grinding machine is functioning properly, then it grains cut from the workpiece. In the grinding, the grinding wheel has its speed in SFPM as well as the spindle of the grinder is checked to make certain that it runs with its specified speed. If the speed of the grinding wheel is slow, then it results in waste of abrasive (Chang and Wu 2015). However, the excessive speed causes the hard grinding action as well as glazes the wheel. The feed of the grinding wheel determines a certain level to end the produced on the work as well as it various types as well as shapes of the grinding wheels (Kim et al. 2015). A grinding machine is regarded as the machine tools as it has a distinguished feature to rotate the abrasive tool. The conventional grinding machine is classified as follows: Surface grinding machine: It is similar to the milling machine that is used to grind the flat surface. These types of grinder are also capable of producing contour surface with formed grinding wheel. The work piece is supported on the rectangular table that moves back as well as forth beneath the grinding wheel (Thomas, David and Manu 2015). It has horizontal wheel spindles as well as mounts straight. Within this machine, the work is magnetically attached to the table, and it is ground by navigating or rotating the movement of the table. Figure 1: Surface-Grinding Machine (Source: Thomas, David and Manu 2015, pp-279) Cylindrical grinding machine: This type of machine is used to produce external cylindrical surface. The surfaces should be straight, profiled as well as tapered. The workpiece rotates about a fixed axis as well as the surface machined concentric to the rotational axis. The basic components of the cylindrical grinding machine are that it consists of wheel head that incorporates the spindle as well as driver motors. A cross slide moves the wheel head to as well as from the work piece (Dudhatra, Chauhan and Khilosia 2015). A headstock that locates as well as drives the workpiece and finally a tailstock holds the other end of the work. Figure 2: Cylindrical Grinding Machine (Source: Dudhatra, Chauhan and Khilosia 2015, pp-37) Internal grinding machine: The machine is used to produce internal cylindrical surface. The surfaces should be straight, grooved, profiled as well as tapered. The standard elements of the internal grinding machine are the worked, which holds the work as well as it has its drive and wheelhead that has its spindle (Loganathan and Gandhi 2015). The internal grinder has transverse movement in order to carry the wheel to as well as from the work zone. Figure 3: Internal Grinding Machine (Source: Loganathan and Gandhi 2015, pp-39) Centerless grinding machine: The workpiece rotates involving the grinding wheels a well as regulating drive wheel. There are two fundamental modes of the centerless grinding machine such as thru-feed as well as in-feed. In the method of thru-feed, the processes of work proceed within the axial direction through a narrow gap between the grinding wheels a well as regulating drive wheel (Guo and Li 2016). The in-feed mode is used to prohibit the thru-feed, the work is positioned on work-rest blade while one of the wheels is retracted as well as provided to the end stop. Then the wheel is carried back, diminishes the gap between the wheels and grinder of work. Figure 4: Centerless grinding machine (Source: Guo and Li 2016, pp-125) Research Questions, Aim, and Sub-goals The following are the research questions: Among the four types of grinding machines, which one is the best for the manufacturing industries? What are the risks the user faces while using the grinding machine? What are the major obstacles of using the grinding machine within manufacturing industries? The aim of the project plan is to analyze the four types of grinding machine, its functions as well as uses. It discusses the useful of the grinding machine to fulfill the purpose of grinding the work (Dhatrak and Gond 2016). The reason behind analyzing four types of grinding machines is that various types of machines serve various purposes to carry out the grinding work. In order to address the research questions, the following are the goals that are expected to achieve while carrying out the project plan as follows: Development of the grinding machine such that it is used to reduce the size of the particle in materials processing. Analyzing the different types of grinding machine to become familiar with its function and uses (Wegener 2015). Finding the challenges as well as obstacles within the grinding machine in the manufacturing industries (Cui et al. 2016). Theoretical Content/ Methodology The researcher performs the research work on the chosen topic that is grinding machine. The analyzing on the chosen topic is carried out by evaluation of different journals, articles, library sources as well as magazines. There are also various types of research works that are carried out to develop an understanding of the topic (Kunihiro et al. 2015). Response Surface Methodology (RSM) is the assortment of the statistical as well as mathematical methods that are used to expand, develop as well as optimize the grinding process. It is the most important application in designing, developing as well as formulating new products with improvement over the existing product designs. Junker (2015) reviewed that the users of grinding machine in the manufacturing industry are aware of the experiences that affect the life choices, and they want to assume control of their safety. From the research, it gives information about various types of grinding machines and their roles and functions. After review of various journals, it is identified that this research study has some limitations. Firstly, there is no such information on the efficiency of grinding machine that is to be increased. Secondly, there is no information about effective modulation of the grinding machine (Loganathan and Gandhi 2015). Thirdly, no performance evaluation is done on various types of machines; therefore, it takes a long time to analyze the results to understand the uses of grinding machines. There is a lack of available data on the grinding machine limits the scope of the analysis (Jauhari, Widodo and Haryanto 2015). The research is conducted within eight weeks, which is not enough for the researcher to gather definite information about the grinding machine. Therefore, it would be better if it should do in longer time. Even simple hypothesis are taken to conduct the literature. Experimental Setup A signal analysis, as well as a knowledge based monitoring system, is used to help enhancement of the current grinding process planning. The system is realized with the software tool that develops the designed algorithms such as Matlab, upgrade from the manual signal processing to automated procedure as well as provides process evaluation (Hong and Yin 2016). It improves the consistency, accuracy as well as objectivity while analyzing the processes of grinding. The start of the art within the manufacturing industry applications relies on a personal understanding of the grinding. There is no such standard are required to follow that creates subjectivity within the analysis (Jauhari, Widodo and Haryanto 2015). Within the analysis, there are no such existing algorithms in order to perform as the study is focused on one grinding cycle. There are no such existing method results in correlation with the process parameters as well as outcomes of the process. Results, Outcome, and Relevance After analyzing the literature review and the research methodology, it is seen that it is required to identify the best grinding machine used for the manufacturing industry such that best result is obtained. If the machine is not handled properly, then it should be dangerous for the users (Wegener 2015). Therefore, it is required to handle the machine properly with the following safety measures: It is required to wear goggles for the operations of the grinding machines. Maintenance of the grinding wheels is required for cracks before mounting. The users should never alter the workpiece or any other work mounting devices when the grinding machine is working. The grinding machine should never be used at speeds more than the recommended speed by the experts. Before turning off the machine, the workpiece should be removed from the grinding wheel (Loganathan and Gandhi 2015). On the bench grinders, the tool rest is adjusted 1/16 to 1/8 inch from the wheel. Apart from this, proper wheel guards are used on the grinding machines (Chang and Wu 2015). The grinding operations are analyzed through monitoring as well as analyzing the power of the spindle during the process. As the grinding process is complex, therefore analysis of the grinding process relies on the personal experience of the engineer. Project Planning and Gantt chart In order to complete the proposed project plan successfully, it is required to maintain a schedule so that within the estimated deadline, the researcher can complete the plan to achieve the project goals as well as objectives. The entire project plan is divided into three blocks, and each of the blocks is then sub-divided into various deliverables such as: Serial Number Activities 1 Project Plan on Grinding Machine 2 Starting the project 2.1 Research on the chosen project topic 2.2 Discuss with the supervisor about the project requirements 2.3 Gathering the information from journals, magazines, etc. 2.4 Reviewing the information 3 Literature review 3.1 Developing the proposed plan 3.2 Discussing with the supervisor on the chosen topic 3.3 Literature review of the state of art proposed for the grinding machines 3.4 Analyzing various types of grinding machines 3.5 Identification of the challenges and obstacles based on using the grinding machines 4 Research Methodology 4.1 Gathering the information from the population using survey interview 4.2 Data collection method 4.3 Data analysis 4.4 Feedback from the individuals 5 Analysis and Evaluation 5.1 Analyzing the results and outcomes 5.2 Evaluating the viewpoints of the supervisor 5.3 Meeting with the objectives 5.4 Reviewing the goals of the project 6 Completion of the project study 6.1 Preparing the final project report Figure 1: Gantt chart (Source: Created by author) Conclusion It is concluded that grinding machine is a tool that is used to operate for grinding of the workpieces. A coarse wheel is used as the tool for cutting. The grinder is used to shape as well as finish the materials with low surface roughness as well as the quality of a high surface. From the literature analysis, it is identified that it is a finishing operation that are used to remove small quantities of metals in order to deliver high accurate quality. Apart from this, some of the grinding applications, it is involved to eliminate high volumes of metal within the manufacturing industries. The requirements of an efficient grinding machine include of abrasive components that are harder, friable, and those are capable of controlling the fracturing. The grinding machine is classified based on its surfaces that they are used to produce. In order to bring the work to its required size and shape, the surplus stock is removed by feeding the job against or by forcing the revolving wheel agains t the job. It is also concluded that the processes of grinding are complicated as the process of materials removing is complex. The existing knowledge incorporates a limited amount of knowledge, and further study should be conducted on the mechanisms of the grinding processes in order to provide guidelines in the knowledge base. Niccolo Machiavelli Essays - Italian Politicians, Machiavellianism

Niccolo Machiavelli Machiavelli wrote this book, The Prince, which is about becomming a political leader from examples of his own life. Niccolo Machiavelli lived from 1469 to 1527, saw what we now consider the height of the Italian Renaissance- a period that produced some of Italy's greatest achievements in the arts and sciences, but that also produced horrible scandals and the establishment of foreign domination over the peninsula. Brought up while members of the powerful Medici family were masters of Florence, he studied the classics and learned to read and write in Latin. He also showed a keen interest in, and the ability to learn from, the world around him. He was a diplomat, a student of history, and a writer of comedy, and his sharp and unique insights changed the face of political science forever. Machiavelli was born in Florence on May 3, 1469. We first hear of him playing an active role in the affairs of his native city in 1498, when the government dominated by Girolamo Savonarola, the Dominican friar whose puritanical views had influenced Florence for the preceding four years, fell from power. Therefore, the post was left unoccupied, but after a short delay the little known name of Niccolo Machiavelli was put forward as a possible replacement. He was only twenty-nine years old at the time and apparently had no previous administrative experience. His nomination was confirmed, however, and he was appointed second chancellor of the Florentine Republic. It was an enormous opportunity, and the experiences and insights he would gain in the post would be used later in writing The Prince. At the time Machiavelli entered public service, there were already well-established standards for filling major administrative positions in Florentine government. In addition to exhibiting diplomatic skill, civil servants were expected to display competence in the humane disciplines. These disciplines had been derived from ancient Roman sources especially from the orator and statesman Cicero, who had written about the need for formal study of Latin, rhetoric, history, moral philosophy, and politics to prepare a student for professional service to the community. Ultimately, they were the ancestor of the humanities, or liberal arts curriculum in contemporary education. The popularity of the humanistic ideals in Florentine government help explain how Machiavelli came to be appointed to a responsible government post at such an early age. His family, though neither rich nor aristocratic, were closely allied with the city's leading humanists. Machiavelli's father, Bernardo, a lawyer, had acquaintance with several distinguished humanist scholars. According to his father's diary, Machiavelli began formal education at the age of seven, which included the study of Latin, the language that was the passport to the world of humanistic learning. By the time Machiavelli was twelve he had graduated from primary school and was enrolled in private classes. Later, he was accepted at the University of Florence, where he received training in the humanities, literature, and sciences from Marcello Adriani, who succeeded Scala as first chancellor of Florence. During the next fourteen years, Machiavelli was sent on numerous diplomatic missions to France, Switzerland, and Germany. His observations abroad resulted in many of the ideas that form the basis for the major statements found in his political works. In The Prince, for example, Machiavelli comments at length on Germany's well-fortified cities and evaluates the weak leadership of the French king, Louis XII. History Reports

Computers Make Life Easier

Computers Make Life Easier Free Online Research Papers Computers have made an impact in this world. From the past until the present people have been using computers for many different things. Although, theirs a lot of people who have used a computer; But they dont understand it and maybe not even appreciate it. Now, what if their werent any computers at all? Would you think itll be easy? Well, honestly I feel that computers have made our lives easier and I will answer how. Computers have been in this world since the B.C. Era, with Antikythera mechanism; which was used like a calculating mechanism. Theyre were other calculating mechanisms in that era like, abacus which means dust, astrolabe, and the slide rule. By the 1200s, a astronomical clock was built called The Castle Clock. This device was built to display the zodiac in the skies. In 1890, a Tabulating machine was manufactured by IBM which was used to punch the cards of the U.S. Census that was scheduled for that year. Later on in 19th century, other machines were manufactured by IBM; Like, the Boolean algebra, the vacuum tube, and the teleprinter. In the beginning of the 20th century, scientists thought of scientific computing which they would call them analog computers; which opened the gateway to digital computers. In the 1940s, their were many installations of digital computers. One of the installations was Suze Z3 which was manufactured to store memory and calculate. Another installation was Harvard Mark 1 manufactured by IBM and to store numbers of memory and also calculate. Another installation was Csirac, which was also used as the same as Suze Z3 And Harvard Mark 1. Back then, computers were these huge server like machines. By the 1960s, 70s, and 80s; computers were becoming machines for houses. In the 1980s IBM invented the Personal Computer as known as P.C. By the 1990s the P.C. Became a must have and with AOL introducing the Internet, their wasnt a house that didnt own a P.C. Throughout history the computers were being used and only for a few purposes. Those purposes were: to store information; to calculate major numbers; to gather up information and transfer it for one place to another; to get access to the files that they needed; and to do their jobs. Now computers are being used for everything. You can access the Internet, you can type up papers, you can construct a database, you can create a presentation, you can listen to music, and many other functions. Computers have made our lives easier just by functioning and accommodating our needs as to the new technology and the old. Everything we see, do, listen, and feel is just basic computer emotions. I think if computers were never invented then life would not only be hard but it would also be boring. And if you think about it everything is being run by computers. P.C.s have ruled the world since men built it. Without any P.C.s their wouldnt be any food, their also wouldnt be any cars, their wouldnt be any money, and I think their wouldnt be no world. Think about it, if their werent any P.C.s in the world we would have mostly nothing that we do have now: like cellphones; i pods; digital cameras; cable; Internet; and so much more. New Standards for Revenue Recognition Research Paper

New Standards for Revenue Recognition - Research Paper Example The IFRS stipulates minimum requirements on matters of revenue recognition. All in all the IAS 18 Revenue and IAS Construction Contracts are the main fields that it addresses. However, IAS 18 offers little explanation on issues that relate to multiple-element arrangements. The existing guidelines for revenue recognition as per the U.S. GAAP are so many. In the real sense, they cannot address the exact transactions or the target industries. With the mushrooming of new trends in transactions, the Board is facing challenges in addressing the issue. The first proposal was made on December 19, 2008 by both the IASB and the FASB. Bearing in mind that GAAP had a different approach from that of IFRS; the objectives made in the proposal were to make an improvement on the already existing guidelines. This gave birth to the concept of developing one model that can be utilized in addressing revenue recognition. In application, a company will be only able to recognize its revenue when the obligat ion is satisfactory. In this case, all services and transactions must satisfy their customer’s needs as per the contract (www.fasb.org, March 2014). On June 24, 2010, the Boards made a proposal to have the new joint standard for revenue recognition in place. In their view, adopting this proposal would bring the single revenue recognition standard in place. This will make it easy for IFRS and GAAP to address issues across all capital markets and industries with little differences (http://www.ifrs.org March, 2014).

The Motives of Enculturation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

The Motives of Enculturation - Essay Example   Markedly, upon interviewing two individuals from different cultures; a Guatemala and Tibetan, it’s evident that enculturation, measured by the career values and choices made are directly influenced by family cultures. The first interviewee was a Tibetan registered nurse, working in a public hospital. For confidential purposes, the interviewees’ fine details including the hospital’s name are withheld. Being born in late 1979 his parents were typical Tibetans who lived in the southern parts of USA. He was brought up in a rural set-up, lived in the discrimination era and hence spent most of his childhood time with Asian natives. Currently, the interviewee acknowledged that he lives in a completely different environment, amidst blacks, Asians, Latin natives and whites, both at workplace and neighborhood: hence his own culture has become less important. The second interviewee was a Guatemalan woman, working in a cereal production farm. The lady in question was ambitious, social and maintained a cheerful face all through the interview time, responding to the questions precisely and splendidly. Contrary to her cultural obligation, the lady confirmed that she was a senior agricultural officer in the firm she worked for. Similar to the Tibetan guy, the lady was also brought up in suburban areas, was in her mid-thirties, almost turning 35, with her parents being traditionally encompassed. She was a graduate, the only girl in a family of three, and illiterate parents. Both respondents appeared to be positive about the interview. They cheerfully responded to the questions as it was a platform to confess the advantages that accrued from their enculturation process.  Ã‚

The Future in Cyberpunk :: Genre Literature Science Fiction Essays Papers

The Future in Cyberpunk Works Cited Missing The defining characteristics of the cyberpunk genre have been debated since the beginnings of the literary movement. Some authors, classified as cyberpunk, question the very existence of this label, while others are in constant disagreement about the traits that make up the literature. Authors such as Bruce Sterling believe that cyberpunk is the integration of technology and literature in a world where the gap between science fiction and reality is rapidly closing; however, others such as Lewis Shiner have formed the opinion that this literature is merely a product of pop culture, hence it should not have any true literary importance. Furthermore, cyberpunk is said to be the voice of the underground in modern society, and the vision of a new technological world. These theories represent the different views of the major authors in this genre, thus it becomes difficult to define a literary style from such opposing views. A more constructive method is to analyze the major characteristic s and styles used in the stories considered as cyberpunk. The negative portrayal of the integration of technology and society is a fundamental tenet of the literature, because it presents a pessimistic vision of scientific advancement. The genre's dark tones, seen in the styles of it's major authors, emphasize the bleak images throughout the futuristic fiction. The constant conflict between the individual and a technologically advanced society is a major theme of the genre, for it stresses man's insignificance. These characteristics are interwoven into the fabric of cyberpunk and form a bleak image of science fiction and the future. The issue of technology and its integration into society is a major pillar of most science fiction; however, it is not an essential feature of cyberpunk. The concepts of cyberpunk literature are futuristic, but technology is not prevalent in the literature. In "Rock On" synthesizers, special effects, lasers, and other virtual objects bring forth images of the future and technology. But the major theme revolves around the fact that the main character is trapped in the constructs of this world. Another example is seen in "The Girl Who Was Plugged In", because the author took much care in trying to explain the possible scientific advances, yet again the major theme in the story is the character's struggle to find her individuality amongst the technology. Much of science fiction is about how the individual uses the technology to overcome the problems that confront him, conversely in the realm of cyberpunk the character's individuality is in conflict with the impersonalness of technology.

Ernest Hemingway, a Legacy for American Literature Essay

Some say that Hemingway’s personal life should disqualify him from the literature canon. They state that his torrent affairs, his alcoholism, and his mental state should preclude him from entry into the canon. These are the very things that help to make Hemingway a unique writer. Although his genre is fiction, he relies on his real life experiences with the people and places that he visited. The very definition of the literary canon disputes these critics. â€Å"The authors that represent the literary canon are those that are widely assigned in high school and college classrooms and have had a great influence on other authors. Literary critics and historians frequently and fully discuss them. The works by these authors are most likely to be included in anthologies and studied as World Masterpieces, Major English Authors, or Great American Writers. † (Goodvin) Hemingway’s influences on other writers and his worldwide acclaim, along with his distinctive style have earned him a spot in the American Literature canon. Ernest Hemingway was once one of the most prominent people on the earth. Numerous countries respect Hemingway and his writing style. His creative writing details the lives and life’s lessons of people such as bullfighters, anglers, and soldiers. His portrayal of these men of courage who were seemingly indifferent to joy, grief, pleasure, and pain won him acclaim from critics all over the world. â€Å"His legendary writing style, influenced by Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein,† (American Authors) is direct, to the point, and spoken in an even tone. This style is suited to his main subject matter. His straightforward no frills writing style became so well known that many others frequently copied it. Some literary critics consider Hemingway, as â€Å"the father of The Lost Generation, a subcategory, of the American Modernist Period in literature. † (Goodvin) Hemingway’s literary legacy is his off hand, direct story telling prose, which has been a helpful model for numerous novelist of the twentieth century. â€Å"The impact of Hemingway’s style on American Literature is massive. It still has influence today. † (American Authors) His style influenced so many authors that his style is in a great deal of fiction today written by other authors who copied it. Some of the authors of today are influenced either directly by Hemingway or indirectly through other writers who emulated his style. James Nagel, Professor of American Literature at the University of Georgia, said it best,  Ã¢â‚¬Å"No other writer has equaled Hemingway in portraying a cultural image that links the time-honored masculine virtues of power, honesty, and fortitude. † His writings reveal an unwavering commitment to literature and to the integrity of his craft. He captures the essence of the human experience in a writing style that is uncomplicated, direct, modest, and pleasingly stylish. Hemingway learned to write in controlled and understated prose as a cub reporter for the Kansas City Star. This style has served him well and he used it in the best of his works. Hemingway’s simple style, absent of elaborate extremes and metaphoric add-ons has influenced many of today’s reporters in almost all multi media such as newspapers, magazines and even television news. The refinement of Hemingway’s writing style draws from the precision with which he illustrates the character, personality, and temperament of individual experience. In his own time, Hemingway affected writers within his modernist literary circle. According to Kenneth Lynn, â€Å"James Joyce called A Clean, Well Lighted Place, one of the best stories ever written. â€Å"Hemingway’s style portrayed the truth of the situation. He influenced writers such as â€Å"Jack Kerouac, The Subterraneans (1958)† (American Authors), and other Beat Generation writers. J. D. Salinger, writer of The Catcher in the Rye (1951), â€Å"is said to have wanted to be a great American short story writer in the same stratum as Hemingway. † (Qtd Lynn 416) â€Å"Hemingway’s abrupt prose style is known to have inspired Bret Easton Ellis, Less than Zero (1985), Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club (1996), Douglas Coupland, Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture (1991) and many other Generation X writers. † (Burgess) Even when Hemingway was in his early stages of writing, when he was just developing into the writer he would become, noted novelist such as Stein, Ford, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and James Joyce proclaimed him the next great American novelist. (Burgess) Hemingway’s influence goes beyond the more recognized fiction authors. His tightly written prose is in quite a bit of Western and Crime genre novels by Elmore Leonard. (American Authors) Leonard once said, â€Å"I learned by imitating Hemingway? Although, I didn’t take myself or anything as seriously as he did. † (Qtd. Burgess) Hemingway’s impact on Latin American Literature can be seen in the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who imitated Hemingway’s view of man’s struggle with the sea in many of his novels. Marquez not only emulates Hemingway’s view, he also duplicates his writing style. (Burgess) Hemingway’s first three books, Three Stories and Ten Poems (1923), In Our Time (short stories, 1924), and The Torrents of Spring (a novel, 1926), had fascinated critics chiefly because of his literary style. Hemingway’s first novel, The Sun Also Rises (1926), won him worldwide fame. A plot less story concerning disheartened refugees in Paris who break away from their boredom with alcohol consumption, fighting, and sex; this novel turned out to be the standard by which all other writers of the lost generation would be compared. Hemingway only improved his writing style with his next book, A Farewell to Arms (1929), based on his wartime experience in Italy. His coverage of the Spanish Civil War as a correspondent spawned another fine novel, For Whom the Bell Tolls (1940). Hemingway’s novella, The Old Man and the Sea, (1952) first published in Life magazine and was never meant to be a book. It is a fundamental story about an elderly Cuban fisherman; the book won the Pulitzer Prize. According to Lynn, â€Å"it was mentioned as one of the reasons he was awarded the 1954 Nobel Prize for literature. † (Burgess) Hemingway also published several other short stories, which glorify masculinity, courage, and the value of life itself. Although, some of these short stories are not as popular as his novels, they do play an integral role in understanding just how enormous Hemingway’s influence on American Literature has been. Although Hemingway has many works, his truth in writing always remains the same. His portrayal of life has also been significant, for he portrays a truthful world of selfishness and hostility, of conflict that naturally occurs in relationships and the cruelty of war, which has everlasting effects on the psyche of his major characters. His theme of the effects of violence and the consequences of greed has a profound effect in the lives of his characters. Jake Barnes is sexually dysfunctional in â€Å"The Sun Also Rises,† and he cries in the private over his infatuation for Brett Ashley. In â€Å"A Farewell to Arms,† Frederic Henry has seen the destruction of war, which pales in comparison to the loss of the one woman he loved. In â€Å"For Whom the Bell Tolls† there is not only the loss to the people of Spain, there is a private defeat as well, as Robert Jordan is about to die just as he finds his one true love in Maria. In â€Å"The Old Man and the Sea,† Hemingway depicts an aged Santiago searching for dignity in old age. He must win a long fight with a marlin to prove, one final time, that he can still be a functional member of society. It is as writer that Hemingway merits the consideration of the American Literature canon. He is defiantly one of the best prose stylists in American Literature. His astonishing short stories portray the agonizing realities of his age and forces into public view a comprehension of the realities of war. The exploits of Nick Adams paint a picture of the agonies faced by the adolescents of his generation; Hemingway’s four most popular novels trace the distressing confusion of life, for all time. Hemingway makes clear in â€Å"The Old Man and the Sea† that even in the distress of life there can be dignity in determination and pride in dedication when performing a task, which everyone says cannot be done. As a novelist, Hemingway was perfection. It is in the truthfulness, which he approaches his writing and the expertise above all, which will carry on. The Issue of Gun Control - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 2 Words: 718 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/03/19 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Gun Control Essay Did you like this example? As we all know, gun control has been a rising issue in the United States since the early 2000s. This is because of the extremely high number of mass shootings that have occurred in America in these recent years. Between 2000 and 2014 there were at least 126 mass shootings. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "The Issue of Gun Control" essay for you Create order The United States has highest rate of gun violence in the world. There are more guns than people. There is a never-ending controversy on whether gun control laws should be stricter, remain the same, or even be less strict. I interviewed one of my friends to see what his opinion was about the issue. I first asked him his stance. He doesnt think there should be more restrictions on gun control. When I asked him why he felt this way he gave me a couple reasonings. First, as most people with this belief would say, he said that if someone wanted to kill other people they would find a way regardless of what the law says. Another common saying is guns dont kill people, people kill people. Gun violence occurs because some people dont respect the right all Americans have to live. Guns arent the problem. He gave me an example to back up his claim as well. He said that the United Kingdom has very strict gun control laws, but violent crime rate hasnt decreased, it has actually risen. In fact, their crime rate has doubled since they passed the Firearms amendment that banned hand guns and made overall stricter gun regulations (Gun Facts). People found other ways to kill others, such as stabbing. The United Kingdoms homicide rate has always been lower than the United States due to cultural differences, not differences in the law. Next, he said there are already a lot of regulations you need to go through in order to purchase a gun. Things that disqualify you from having a gun include being a fugitive, an addict, have been convicted, are mentally ill, have had a restraining order against you, are dishonorably discharged from the military, are not a legal citizen, and more. The laws also vary in different states. I, however, disagree with this. I believe it should definitely be harder to purchase a gun than it is. And I also believe its too easy to purchase one illegally and something needs to be done about that. You dont even need a background check if you buy a gun online, at a gun show, or through a private sale (Criminal Watch Dog). Another reason he stated is that guns are how we protect ourselves from a tyrannical government, which I guess is true and the whole reason we have the Second Amendment in the first place. The Second Amendment states, A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed. The whole reason of this amendment is because way back when we needed to protect ourselves, so the government wouldnt abuse its power. He said that the first step to taking away peoples rights is taking away their right to bear arms. The example he gave is Nazi Germany. They were being abused by the government and werent allowed to fight back and also couldnt fight back because they were not allowed to bear arms. This resulted in the death of five to six million Jews, more than three million Soviet prisoners of war, more than two million Soviet civilians, more than one million Polish civilians, more the one million Yugoslav civilians, about 70,000 handicapped civilians, and more than 200,000 gypsies (The Telegraph). I believe there will forever be an on-going debate about the issue and no matter what solution we come up with people are going to be upset and disagree. I dont think I know enough to have a complete stance on this topic. I think I am neutral. I agree with some things my friend talked about such as people are always going to find a way to kill other people, but I disagree that gun control laws are already strict enough. I think people should have to go through a bigger, more improved process in order to purchase a fire arm. I also think that we shouldnt completely take away the Second Amendment, but maybe revise it.
